The History of Westminster Presbyterian

Uncover the backstory to our church and learn about our outstanding community.

At WPC we strive to provide a sanctuary for prayerful worship within a respectful and welcoming environment and to meet the spiritual needs of our congregation and community, using Christian ideas and values.

Our History

Lincoln Village, the location of our church today, had two streets, few houses, and no churches. A group of Presbyterians (Read and Barbara Kingsbury, Charley Knoop, Valla Offensend, Dale Newton, and Reverend William Boder of Claysville, PA) met at the Kingsburys' home to change this.

After several meetings, with some officials with the United Presbyterian Church, Westminster United Presbyterian Church was established as a mission church and the presbytery appointed Rev. William Boder as pastor.

Meet Our Pastor

Pastor Jon

We welcome Reverend Jonathan Carlisle as our Guest (GAP) Preacher. Jon grew up in upstate New York. Over his 41 years of called ministry, he served congregations in Waterloo, NY (in the Finger Lakes); Beaver Falls, PA (north of Pittsburgh); and Coshocton, Ohio. He and his wife Sue raised five children and are blessed with a dozen grandchildren. They now live near the family of their youngest who teaches music in New Albany.

Jon will continue as our GAP pastor thru June 2025.

About Presbyterians

Presbyterians affirm that God comes to us with grace and love in the person of Jesus Christ, who lived, died, and rose for us so that we might have eternal and abundant life in him. As Christ’s disciples, called to ministry in his name, we seek to continue his mission of teaching the truth, feeding the hungry, healing the broken, and welcoming strangers. God sends the Holy Spirit to dwell within us, giving us the energy, intelligence, imagination, wisdom, and love to be Christ’s faithful disciples in the world.

Presbyterian refers to the governmental structure of the church, led by Presbyters (from the New Testament Greek meaning Elders). Elders provide the spiritual leadership of the church. We also have a board of Deacons to provide care for the members and community.

Welcome To WPC

Welcome to Westminster Presbyterian Church! Our congregation has historically been a neighborhood-based church, and we seek to continue to broaden our understanding of who is our neighbor, as Christ calls us to do. Worship at WPC is generally traditional. We generally use the piano to accompany hymns on Sunday.

Fellowship Hour on Sundays:

On the 2nd Sunday from 10-10:30 in the "Upper Room" above the main sanctuary

We gather to enjoy coffee and usually some kind of baked goods before the service.

Our service begins at 10:30 a.m. Dress is anywhere from formal to jeans.
